Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal)

Description:

Behavior: The Sohal Tang, also known as the Red Sea Clown Surgeonfish, is a robust and active species known for its striking coloration and bold personality. These fish can be highly territorial and aggressive, especially towards other tangs. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas. Sohal Tangs are known for their constant grazing on algae and active swimming patterns.

Color: The Sohal Tang is visually stunning, featuring a body that is predominantly blue-gray with bold, horizontal black stripes running from head to tail. The fins are highlighted with vibrant blue edges, and the caudal fin has a striking white and yellow pattern. The vivid coloration makes them a standout addition to any marine aquarium.

Diet: Sohal Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in marine algae. They will graze on algae growing in the tank and should be provided with a variety of seaweed and algae-based foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional vegetable treats like blanched spinach or zucchini can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Sohal Tangs are highly territorial and aggressive towards other tangs and similar-looking species. Suitable tankmates include larger, robust fish such as angelfish, wrasses, and other semi-aggressive species. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Sohal Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums. However, their aggressive nature requires careful monitoring in a mixed tank.

Max Size: Sohal Tangs can grow up to 16 inches (40 cm) in length. Due to their large size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Sohal Tangs are commonly found in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean, particularly around the waters of the Gulf of Aden and the coast of East Africa.

Sexual Dimorphism: Sohal Tangs do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
