Description:
Behavior: The Spiny Box Pufferfish, also known as the Striped Burrfish, is a unique and hardy species known for its distinctive spines and engaging personality. These fish are generally peaceful but can become aggressive if provoked or if they feel threatened. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas. Spiny Box Pufferfish are known for their curious nature and will often explore their surroundings and interact with their tankmates.
Color: The Spiny Box Pufferfish is visually distinctive, featuring a body covered in short, sharp spines that are more prominent when the fish is inflated. Their coloration varies from tan to light brown, with dark vertical stripes and spots. This pattern provides excellent camouflage among the rocks and corals. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase as they mature.
Diet: Spiny Box Pufferfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish fillets. They have strong beaks and may also need hard-shelled foods like clams or snails to help wear down their constantly growing teeth. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Spiny Box Pufferfish are generally peaceful but can become aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates. Suitable tankmates include larger, non-aggressive species such as tangs, angelfish, and other robust fish. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or eaten. Due to their potential for aggression, it is important to carefully select tankmates that can coexist with them.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Spiny Box Pufferfish are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. Additionally, they may chew on corals to file down their beaks. They are best kept in fish-only setups.
Max Size: Spiny Box Pufferfish can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their large size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 100 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.
Origin: Spiny Box Pufferfish are commonly found in the Western Atlantic region, particularly around the waters of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Florida.
Sexual Dimorphism: Spiny Box Pufferfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
