The Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber is a beneficial addition to marine aquariums, known for its excellent sand-sifting abilities. Its elongated, cylindrical body features a mottled brown and tan coloration with subtle banding, resembling a tiger’s tail. This species plays a vital role in maintaining a clean and well-aerated substrate by consuming detritus and organic matter.
Size:
Can grow up to 12 inches in length, though it typically remains smaller in home aquariums.
Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 50 gallons is recommended, with a well-established sand bed for natural foraging.
Temperament:
Non-aggressive and entirely peaceful, making it a safe addition to community reef aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or other invertebrates. It helps improve water quality by processing detritus within the sand.
Diet:
Feeds on organic matter found in the sand but benefits from supplemental feeding with finely ground marine foods if the natural food supply is insufficient.
Tank Setup & Care:
- Requires a deep, fine sand bed for burrowing and feeding.
- Prefers a stable, mature aquarium with low to moderate flow.
- Should not be housed with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its soft body.
- Handle with care, as stressed sea cucumbers can release toxins that may affect tankmates.
