Tomini Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis)

Discover the Graceful Tomini Tang

The Tomini Tang, also known as the Tomini Surgeonfish, is a stunning, active species known for its algae-grazing abilities and peaceful nature. With its compact size and beautiful colors, the Tomini Tang is an excellent addition to both reef and fish-only aquariums. As one of the smaller tang species, it’s ideal for tanks that may not be large enough for other larger tangs, but still need an efficient algae grazer.

Appearance: The Tomini Tang is a striking fish with a brown to grayish body, highlighted by bright orange or yellow accents on its dorsal and anal fins. Its tail fin is edged in a vivid white or blue, adding to its elegant appearance. Though smaller than other tangs, the Tomini Tang’s beauty is enhanced by its sleek body and vibrant markings, making it a standout in any marine aquarium.

Behavior: The Tomini Tang is known for its peaceful demeanor and active swimming behavior. It spends much of its time grazing on algae along the rock surfaces, helping to keep the aquarium clean. While generally non-aggressive, it can display territorial behavior towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, especially if housed in a tank that is too small. However, when given ample space, the Tomini Tang coexists peacefully with most tankmates.

Diet: The Tomini Tang is primarily herbivorous, thriving on a diet rich in marine algae. They are excellent algae grazers, constantly feeding on algae growing on live rock, glass, and tank surfaces. In addition to grazing, they should be offered dried seaweed or algae sheets, as well as high-quality herbivore pellets and flakes. Occasionally, they may enjoy meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, but the bulk of their diet should be plant-based to maintain their health and vibrant colors.

Tank Requirements: The Tomini Tang requires a minimum tank size of 70 gallons, with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Providing an open area for swimming, along with rocky structures for algae growth, is essential to their well-being. Maintaining stable water conditions with proper filtration is crucial for the health of this species, as is regular water quality maintenance. Due to their smaller size, they are more adaptable to medium-sized tanks compared to other tang species.

Tankmates: Tomini Tangs are generally peaceful and can be housed with a wide range of tankmates, including other peaceful species like clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and angelfish. When housed with other tangs, it’s advisable to introduce them simultaneously to minimize territorial aggression. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food sources are abundant to reduce competition and aggression.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: The Tomini Tang is considered reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. Its algae-grazing habits help control algae growth in reef tanks, making it a valuable addition to reef environments. Their constant grazing, peaceful nature, and active swimming add both functional and aesthetic value to the aquarium.

Max Size: The Tomini Tang can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, making it one of the smaller tang species, perfect for mid-sized tanks.

Origin: The Tomini Tang is native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of Fiji, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. They are typically found grazing on algae in shallow reef environments.
