Description:
The Vampire Pleco, also referred to as the Galaxy Pleco, is a striking freshwater catfish with a dark black body speckled with small white or yellow spots. Its common name comes from the small, fang-like teeth it uses to scrape food from surfaces. Native to the Rio Orinoco and Rio Ventuari in Venezuela, this nocturnal species is popular for its stunning appearance and peaceful temperament.
Size:
Up to 10 inches (25 cm)
Aquarium Size:
A minimum of 50 gallons is recommended for a single adult due to its size and need for ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C)
-
pH: 6.5 to 7.0
-
Hardness: Soft to moderate
Temperament:
Vampire Plecos are generally peaceful but can become territorial with other bottom dwellers, especially other plecos or large catfish. They tend to be shy and prefer a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spaces.
Group Size:
Best kept singly or with carefully chosen tankmates due to their territorial nature. If kept in groups, ensure a spacious aquarium with multiple hiding spots.
Compatibility:
Ideal tankmates include peaceful midwater fish such as tetras, rainbowfish, gouramis, and angelfish. Avoid housing them with small invertebrates or other plecos with similar diets to prevent competition.
Diet:
Primarily carnivorous. Vampire Plecos feed on protein-rich foods, including sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and market shrimp. While they may graze on biofilm, they are not effective algae eaters and require a protein-focused diet.
Care Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, they require excellent water quality and a well-oxygenated tank to thrive.
Planted Aquarium:
They can be kept in planted tanks, though plants should be securely anchored as they may disturb the substrate when burrowing or foraging.
Invertebrate Compatibility:
Not recommended with small invertebrates like shrimp or small snails, as they may be seen as prey.
Additional Notes:
Vampire Plecos are nocturnal and prefer low lighting conditions with ample hiding places such as caves, driftwood, and rock structures. Regular water changes are essential due to their protein-rich diet, which can lead to higher bioload.
