Yellow Mimic Tang / Chocolate Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)
The Yellow Mimic Tang, also known as the Chocolate Tang, is a unique and adaptable species that undergoes a dramatic transformation as it matures. Juveniles are bright yellow and often mimic angelfish species like the Lemonpeel Angelfish to avoid aggression, while adults develop a rich brown coloration with hints of orange and blue accents near the eyes and pectoral fins. This species is both a beautiful and functional addition to a reef or fish-only aquarium, helping to control algae growth.
Size:
Reaches a maximum size of about 10 inches.
Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive, especially toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish. Best kept singly unless housed in a very large tank with plenty of rockwork and swimming space.
Reef Compatibility:
Completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. It is an excellent algae grazer, helping maintain a cleaner aquarium environment.
Diet:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on marine algae and seaweed; supplement regularly with dried seaweed sheets, spirulina-based pellets, and occasional frozen foods for variety.
Tank Setup & Care:
-
Requires a large, well-oxygenated tank with plenty of open swimming space.
-
Provide rockwork for grazing and shelter.
-
May show territorial behavior toward new tankmates, so introductions should be done carefully.
